THE MAYOR'S OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMMING RECOGNIZES CRESCENT FOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Crescent, which owns the Houston Center complex, comprised of four downtown buildings and a shopping mall, (1 Houston Center, 2 Houston Center, Fulbright Tower, 4 Houston Center and the Shops at Houston Center), have put together a remarkable recycling program to help make Houston more green.
Houston Center has had an active recycling program in place since 1988. To date the complex has diverted over 14,000 tons of material from our local landfills.
Houston Center has recently implemented a more ambitious recycling program, both to do their part for the environment and to save their customers money on trash expenses.
In April of this year the Houston Center Complex rolled out a comprehensive recycling program which includes collecting glass, aluminum, plastic, cardboard, and paper. Crescent supplied all of their tenants with small recycling bins for under desk paper collection, and large receptacles for collection of paper in their copy and file rooms. They also supplied all kitchens with three receptacles; one for plastics, one for aluminum, and one for wet trash.
The complex has installed compactors and bailers, for collecting cardboard, and a bulb crusher to safely dispose of fluorescent lights. In addition, they have also partnered with a company to recycle/refurbish old computer hardware.
Not only does this new program increase recycling, but also reuse. Houston Center has six schools that have received doors, locksets, computers, file cabinets, copiers, carpet, books, office supplies, and furniture that otherwise would have ended up in the landfill.
All Houston Center buildings have earned the Energy Star rating indicating that they are among the top 25% of facilities in the country for energy performance and all have applied for LEED certification. The Shops at Houston Center is the only Energy Star mall in Houston.
