MAYOR BILL WHITE UNVEILS PLAN FOR FIGHTING CANCER CAUSING BENZENE EMISSIONS INTO HOUSTON'S AIR

May 27, 2008 -- Mayor Bill White today revealed his plan to help make Houston's air safer by reducing airborne amounts of the cancer-causing chemical Benzene. The plan calls for continued air monitoring and legal action to be taken to intervene in the TCEQ permit application and renewal process for large emitters. The plan also calls for full public hearings to clearly define public standards for emissions.

"Our community must have clear and open discussion on the dangers posed by benzene. The large emitters need to know what is and is not acceptable," said Mayor White. "We must find ways to hold them accountable to that standard. People don't have the right to pollute the air that they don't own and we all have to breathe."

Mayor White was joined by researchers, physicians and residents from the ship channel area.
