March 30, 2017 -- Google thinks Houston would be a great city for solar energy but, as the Houston Business Journal posts, would the oil-and-gas capital ever go for it?
Using data from Project Sunroof, which uses satellite imagery from Google Maps and Google Earth to show how much homeowners can save by installing solar panels on their roofs, Google determined that Houston has the most solar energy potential of any U.S. city. It found that if rooftop solar panels were installed on every home or office building, Houston could generate enough electricity to power 1.7 million homes locally for an entire year.
While reaction to solar energy in the past has been mixed, the Business Journal report points out that Sunnova Energy Corp. recently announced it would designate $200 million for residential solar projects.
