YARD TRIMMINGS RECYCLING REGULAR SCHEDULE RESUMES:
Sweep And Bag Program Successful

October 24, 2008 -- The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department will resume its normal yard trimmings recycling program schedule on Monday, October 27th. Yard trimmings collections service occurs on the same day as the automated garbage collection.

Solid Waste Management Department Director Harry Hayes said Sweep and Bag program, in which citizens are asked to bag loose storm debris and set at the curb, was successful. City crews have completed three (3) complete “bag” sweeps of the entire city. Bag volume has been more than double what it was for the same period last year.

“Our crews are to be commended for the work. At the onset, the volume of bagged debris was overwhelming, particularly in the Southwest and Northwest parts of the city. It took crews more than one week to complete those areas,” said Director Hayes. “The amount of debris was absolutely unfathomable. However, after three weeks, volumes are normal. Citizens also are to be commended for their extra work in protecting storm drains and ditches by bagging the loose debris.”

OTHER SCHEDULES
Curbside Recycling will also resume beginning Monday, October 27th for recycling customers in the “B week”. “A week” residents will begin receiving service on Monday, November 3rd. Heavy trash schedules remain suspended because crews are still assisting with storm debris collections.

Neighborhood Depositories (heavy trash and storm debris drop-off sites) are still open 7 days a week. However, hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Sunday, November 2, 2008 due to the end of Daylight Savings Time.
